If McCarthy does end up as speaker, he really needs to be called Kevin “(number of times it took to vote him in)” Tries. So, you know, Kevin Thirty Tries. The only exception should be if the number ends in a seven in which case he would Kevin Forty-Seven.

Good lord. Why stop at two?

We watched the new Will Ferrell movie Spirited and it was actually a lot of fun. Yay! Ferrell just needs one more Christmas movie for the trifecta. We also watched The Muppet Christmas Carol and I’ve decided it’s the best version of all of the different A Christmas Carol I’ve seen. Finally, I alone watched Moonfall and it was terrible. So, now you don’t have to watch it. I knew it would be, but I rather enjoy watching terrible movies. I should really be reading books, but we all have our faults.

It’s amazing to me the people of Texas will continue to put up with a state government that refuses to make a better power grid. It feels like, in the case of Texas, it’s inevitable the grid will fail when it’s most needed.

People trash talk the Post Office’s new mail truck, but I absolutely love its look. I wish more cars and trucks had such good visibility and low step-in height. And they’ll be more of them sooner than later.

How do you ruin Twitter? Slowly, then really, really fast. Holy cow is the grifter ruining it quickly.

As far as I can tell, my last post on Instagram was Feb, 19, 2022. Instagram was something I really liked, but the more people I followed (that I actually knew) the sadder I became. There were simply too many posts with staged setups. Maybe it was jealousy over what they were portraying as their perfect lives (even though I knew it was all staged nonsense). In any event, I stopped posting. I did try to start up a small Micro.blog photo account, but for some reason I never took to it. I could always try again, but in order to make it work, I need to set up a routine and I’m not yet motivated into making one. Here’s to 2023!

As far as I can tell, my last:

I haven’t checked it in about a month and it’s honestly pretty easy. I know it’s harder for folks who depend on it for exposure/work and have something to lose, but for a regular schlub like me it’s been pretty easy. I’m glad I never needed Twitter for anything important.

I don’t even post here all that often, but I always mean to.

Our media will be our downfall… part 3 of what will surely big a big number.

The Car-Free Dream.

GOP will get behind Trump indictment just so they don’t have to consider him anymore.

I told friends and neighbors there’d be no red wave and while I’m glad that was indeed the case, I am still so bummed out for Stacey Abrams. She’s the real deal and would have been a great help to Georgia. And I’m not even religious but I can’t help but be offended that GA voters made the Warnock/Walker race so close that it has to resort to a run off. Religious folks picked Walker over a man who has dedicated his adult life to the church? That’s really something.

Also, I’m very proud of my daughter for voting and I am glad to see young folks using their right to vote.

Everyone has good and bad day. I’m trying to remember the good ones and, if nothing else, learn from the bad ones.

Yesterday was a good day. My son and I went to see Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. I didn’t tell him what we were seeing and by sheer luck the Nitehawk’s marquee didn’t have it listed, so he didn’t know what we were seeing until the movie’s title came up on the screen. The movie was a lot of fun. There is nearly nothing better than hearing your child laugh from joy.

Then I had some time to rebuilt a keyboard. Boy do I love me some clicky keyboards. Here’s the Class65 with Tattoine keycaps. Left side of Class65 keyboard with Tatooine keycapsRight side of Class65 keyboard with Tatooine keycaps

Then my son and I had supper together (all leftovers, which gives us both a great deal of satisfaction of not having wasted anything at all).

Finally, we finished The West Wing series.

That was a good day and I won’t forget it. I also won’t forget it because I wrote it down on my blog.

Our media will be our downfall. This was an attempted assassination of the speaker of the house. Right before an election. How is this not bigger news?

Our media will be our downfall. In case that link goes away, here’s a screenshot

As a fan of science fiction, I am in a TV wonderland right now. The Star Wars series have been great (The Clone Wars, The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan) and now with Andor. Andor is just excellent. Dammit, it’s soooo good.

I’ve also been enjoying Star Trek: Lower Decks. Lower Decks is pure fun and I really like the main characters. I would try to be a fifth wheel in that friend group if I was aboard the Cerritos.

Nine rings were gifted to the Race of Men, who above all else desire power.

The Keyboard Meetup

I went to my first ever keyboard meetup in Manhattan yesterday. I am going to guess there were about 50 people in attendance with about 60 keyboards while I was there.

Being an introvert I didn’t really speak with anyone other than a hello or excuse me as I invariably bumped into people.

Overall impressions
People: Generally have very good taste. There was not a single board there which made me think, “That’s terrible.” Now there were plenty of cool boards that weren’t for me (I don’t get the lure of the Keycults or the super mini 40s), but overall I have to say “Well done, strangers from the internet.”

What I must buy: SA Oblivion

What I don’t want: Any super-tiny 40s

What I noticed: I saw a lot of GMK sets (which I guess I should have expected, but didn’t because I guess I’m still a n00b). I had never seen any GMK sets in person (I have some on order, but, you know…) and wow are GMK sets sharp. I did not see any PBTfans sets other than the one I brought.

What I need: More AC. The room was too small and too hot for the amount of people. The organizer updated everyone after the event saying he took a lot of notes as to what worked and what didn’t and he was also aware of the size of the space. Big thumbs from me to the organizer.

What I realized: I am old. Far older than anyone there and while it didn’t bum me out, it did make me feel like I was crowding into a space I didn’t totally fit into. Now, no one said anything and it could be my endless anxiety. It’s not even so much that I care what people think of me (It’s not my business what people think of me), but I try to be aware of sliding into a space that maybe doesn’t need me. Or maybe I just prefer virtual rooms. I am 100% glad I went and I will go to more should they pop up in NYC.

I guess it’s been a year and a half now that I’ve gotten deep into the mechanical keyboard hobby. Mostly, of course, the hobby consists of spending money and then waiting for something to be made.

I’ve met (“met”) so many friendly, helpful, supportive people in this hobby—some my age, some half, that I’m not sure I would have remained (somewhat) sane during this pandemic.

Never being into hobbies before and also never assembling items on my own (I don’t count Ikea furniture) I can’t believe I build my own keyboards and get as much excitement and pleasure out of them as I did on day one.

Here is the Class65 keyboard with Spark keycaps made by PBTfans. PBTfans is a new brand to me who seem to be making keycaps nearly as good as GMK (sharper than GMK, too) for a lot less money.

My son and I just finished Season 1 of Strange New Worlds and I think it’s my favorite Star Trek series. Anson Mount is excellent as Captain Pike, Ethan Peck is perfect as Spock, and I definitely swooned over Jess Bush as Nurse Chapel. Nurse Chapel is already a much better character than in TOS and Bush’s acting is great.

I can’t wait for the next seasons. 🖖
